This time of year the word “peace” is all over the place. “Peace on earth, good will toward men.” “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” “See the day when men of good will live in peace, live in peace again.”
Why so many songs about peace?
Because we live in a noisy, chaotic, busy world.
We long for peace because we don’t slow down. We go more places, do more things, buy more stuff in the quest for happiness here on earth. We think if we are happy we will have some peace.
Happiness does not equal peace, by the way.
You can be happy for a short period of time and not have peace in your life. (Been there, done that, got the girl scout badge.) We long for peace but sign up our children for a 4th activity. We want a peaceful life but continue to argue about our financial situation with our spouse. We pray for peace on earth but tear others down with our words and actions.
So where is peace? What is peace? How do we get peace?
“For he himself (Jesus) is our peace…He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.” (Ephesians 2:14, 17)
True peace is only found in Jesus. An everyday, all out desire to know Him, love Him and trust Him will bring you peace no matter what the chaos is that swirls around you. So if you want peace on earth, it does need to begin with you. You must give up control, give up everything to the only One who provides peace. Only then will you be able to start taking steps toward the peaceful life that you so desperately desire.
Have a peaceful, blessed weekend!
