Welcome to Florida

A friend shared the funniest story with us this past weekend.  She and another friend were living in Atlanta after college in the early 90’s, and one weekend they decided to go to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina on a little girls’ trip.  Off they went, no cell phone (not even an early 90’s bag phone, mind you), no map (now that’s just girls for you – we have a natural sense of direction), only a general idea of how to get from Atlanta to their beachy destination.

Around Macon they got a bit confused and a bunch of bad directions.  But they felt confident as they got on the highway they thought was right and drove on for HOURS until the friend said, “Hey – did you just see that sign?  It said welcome to FLORIDA!”

That made me laugh so hard – come on, ladies – you know when you’re in the car jabbering with friends you are far more tuned in to the conversation than where you are supposed to be going.  (Raise your hand if you’ve ever missed a turn or an exit because another woman was recounting some kind of dramatic story that could easily be turned into a LIFETIME movie…)

And we can get so distracted with what is going on around us – problems, children, money, jobs, relationships – that we totally miss the life that God has planned for us.  We take detours into divorce, addictions, debt or unbiblical lifestyles and end up in a place we never meant to be.

Life doesn’t have to be full of misdirection but the only way to know the path of life is to be in a relationship with the One who has the map.

I love this verse from Psalm 16:  “You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”  (Psalm 16:11)

To paraphrase Pastor Chris Hodges from last Sunday’s message, you can get to South Carolina through Florida but why would you?  Why not submit your life to the author of your life?  You see He knows His plans for you – He knows what will bring you joy and fulfillment way more than you do because He created you.  So don’t drive to South Carolina by going through Florida.  Seek God’s path for your life and be filled with the joy of His presence!

Blessings!
